“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?”
What does it mean that “the body of a Christian is the temple of the Holy Spirit”?
The moment we accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior of our lives and all that we are, we cease to own ourselves. We acknowledge that Jesus has paid for our sinful nature with the price of His own blood and that there’s no other way we could be redeemed. In whichever way we use our bodies, should be for the glory of God. For He says in His word, “You shall be holy, for I Am Holy.”
The question should always be, “Who is glorified in what I’m about to do or say or in the movie I’m playing in my mind, is it God or the devil?” Those who belong to Christ and have the Spirit of God, always desire and strive to keep the temple of the Holy Spirit holy. Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:27 that, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” He also says in Galatians 6:8 that, “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” He said in Romans 6:18 that, “Having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
No one else if not Jesus, could buy us from the choking life that the devil had thrown us into. With His blood He paid the price, eternal price for our lives and all that we are. 1 Corinthians 6:20 says, “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” We belong to God. As Christians, we are set apart and far different from the rest of the world as Paul says in Romans 8:9, “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”
